Our Story

From a very early age, owner Denise Cuevas has had a deep and heartfelt passion for serving the senior community. From sitting with her grandmother and caring for other elderly family members, to attentively listening to the rich life stories of those around her, she always felt a strong calling to pursue a meaningful career in geriatrics and senior care.

In 1999 she chose to open her first assisted living facility focused on delivering one-on-one, high-quality care for each resident. After observing other nursing homes in the area at that time, she recognized that care standards could be improved and that the seniors on the Mississippi Gulf Coast deserved to live in a welcoming place that offered clean, comfortable, and compassionate care on a smaller and more personal scale rather than a larger home with more residents to tend to.

Denise then decided to go to college and obtain a master’s degree in social work with specialization in geriatric care, a decision that only deepened her passion for serving the geriatric population. During this time, she worked in geriatric care units alongside patients and multidisciplinary teams, broadening her understanding of geriatric psychology and the unique needs of older adults. Not only did this time expand her love for elder care, it broadened to help provide a service and enhance the community. These experiences further strengthened her commitment and compassion for caring for individuals living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease who deserve dignity and respect.

In 2023, Denise chose to bring her 30 years of caregiving, geriatric, and social work experience to life in a brand-new facility, and Angel Oaks was proudly opened! We are a fully licensed facility staffed by experienced, highly qualified professionals. Here, patients are attended to like family and are treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve. We are here to serve the senior community and provide a place that they can call home.

A past injury that required two years of rehabilitation taught Denise the importance of regular exercise and staying physically and mentally active. The same holds true for seniors: remaining engaged in meaningful activities helps preserve mobility, cognitive ability, and independence for as long as possible.

At Angel Oaks we go beyond basic care and we meet our residents and family where they are. Our compassionate staff spend quality time with each resident—socializing, praying, and participating in hobbies and conversations—so everyone feels like part of a close-knit family, not forgotten behind closed doors.

When you walk through our doors, we want you to feel warmly welcomed and cared for. Our goal is to make lives thrive and to provide seniors in our community a comfortable, nurturing place they can truly call home. We would be delighted to have you join our family.

Denise attributes the success of Angel Oaks to her parents, Monroe and Graciela Cuevas. Without their support, guidance, and sacrifices, none of this would have been possible. Denise said, “I couldn’t have done this without their constant encouragement and their belief in me, which made all the difference in the world. They are truly the greatest inspiration behind my success, and I will be forever grateful.”

Denise would also like to thank her best friend and partner in life, Angel Caillavet: “Thank you for being my rock and always believing in me.” She also thanks her amazing staff, without whom none of this would be possible: “Thank you for consistently bringing your total devotion to all the residents of Angel Oaks. I am truly grateful and blessed.

FAQs

Are you state licensed?

Yes, we are a fully licensed assisted living facility in good standing with the state of Mississippi.

1

Are you a skilled nursing facility?

No—we are not a skilled nursing facility. Although a licensed nurse is on staff 24/7, we do not provide skilled nursing services. Residents must be ambulatory and able to walk when they arrive. If a resident later loses mobility, we will adapt care to their needs.

2

What makes you different?

Angel Oaks is a privately owned assisted living home. We keep a large, caring staff so each resident gets more one-on-one attention. Unlike big facilities with fewer staff per resident, we aim to provide attentive, around-the-clock care so residents can thrive.

3

Do you have easy access to the hospital?

Yes, we are located north of Interstate 10, with convenient access and just a short 15-minute drive to Ocean Springs Hospital.

4

Do you have a Hurricane Evacuation Plan?

5

Unless state officials order an evacuation, residents remain in place. We have an on‑site generator so power will be maintained. Angel Oaks is located north of the interstate and sits outside any designated flood zone.

Are there special outings for the residents?

6

Yes — our staff take residents who can be safely transported to restaurants and other outings. These trips boost morale and give residents opportunities to socialize with each other.

What does Angel Oaks do if my loved one is hospitalized?

7

If a resident requires extended hospital care, we can arrange, upon request and for an additional fee, for a dedicated sitter provided by Angel Oaks to be present with the patient in the hospital to provide companionship and support.
